Baby monitor app vs dedicated monitor: an honest guide

I build a baby monitor app, so discount the rest of this accordingly. It also means I have spent a long time with the hardware I am competing against, and some of it does things I cannot do in software.

The decision depends on facts about your house that I have no access to: how dark the nursery gets, how reliable your broadband is, whether you own a spare phone, how far from the room you go while your child is asleep. What follows is the actual list of trade-offs so you can apply it yourself.

A dedicated monitor is a single-purpose device with infrared night vision that keeps working without a router or an internet connection. A monitor app adds no hardware, streams over Wi-Fi and cellular so it is not confined to one network, and gives every parent their own alerts. Choose hardware for a dark nursery and total independence. Choose an app for range, screen quality and travel.

The three things you are choosing between

Most comparisons treat this as apps versus hardware. There are really three categories, and they fail in different ways.

Radio monitors (DECT, FHSS, "non-Wi-Fi"). A camera unit and a screen unit that talk directly over a dedicated radio link. No internet, no account, no app.

Wi-Fi cameras. A camera on your home network, viewed through the manufacturer's app on your phone, usually with a cloud account behind it.

Monitor apps. Two devices you already own, one acting as the camera and one as the viewer, connected through software.

What a dedicated radio monitor genuinely does better

It cannot ring

The parent unit is a screen that does one thing. It will never show a work notification at 3am, never ring mid-feed, and never get carried out of the room by someone who wanted to look something up. If you have ever picked up your phone to check the camera and surfaced twenty minutes later in an email thread, you already know what that separation is worth.

It sees in complete darkness

Dedicated monitors carry infrared LEDs. They illuminate the cot with light you cannot see and the sensor can, which is why the picture works in a room with no light at all.

Phones cannot do this. There is no infrared illuminator, and the camera filters infrared out. A monitor app occupies two devices for the whole night. If you have a spare phone in a drawer, that is free. If you do not, the monitor costs you a phone every evening. A one-phone household should count that as a genuine expense when comparing prices.

There is nothing on the internet to attack

A digital radio monitor has no IP address, no account, no password and no cloud service. It cannot be accessed from another country because there is no route to it. Interception requires physical proximity and equipment, and modern frequency-hopping digital models make even that hard. Older analogue monitors are the exception and can be picked up by nearby receivers.

For a lot of parents this one property settles the question on its own, and that is a defensible way to decide.

Some of them do things software cannot

Motorised pan, tilt and zoom. A room thermometer. A speaker built for talkback rather than a phone's earpiece. Separate sensor pads or wearables in the higher-priced products. No app can motorise a phone or add a thermometer to it.

What an app does better

The camera and the screen

A five-year-old iPhone has a better sensor, better optics and a better display than most monitors under £200. In daylight and in a dimly lit room the difference is obvious. The comparison inverts in a pitch-dark room, for the infrared reason above.

It is not confined to one network

Radio monitors are limited by range, and the range on the box was measured outdoors with nothing in the way. Wi-Fi cameras are limited by your Wi-Fi, and often by a router setting you do not control when you are away from home.

The questions worth asking of any specific model: where does footage go, how long is it kept, who can reach it, and does the account support two-factor authentication. Credential reuse is the documented weak point in this category, and it is a weak point you inherit.

Radio monitors run from roughly £40 for audio-only to £150 for a decent video model. Better video monitors sit between £100 and £250, and camera systems with sensors or subscriptions of their own go past £300.

Privacy, in all three directions

Radio monitors are the most private thing in this comparison, by a distance, because they are not connected to anything. The cost is that you must be within range.

Wi-Fi cameras concentrate the risk in an account and a stored archive. The failure cases are well documented and they mostly involve reused passwords rather than exotic attacks.

Frequently asked questions

Is a phone camera good enough for a dark room? In a room with some light, yes, and MonitorUltra brightens the picture automatically. In total darkness a phone has no infrared illuminator, so a dedicated monitor with infrared LEDs will show you more.
