A baby monitor that travels with you

A travel monitor has one job a home monitor does not: it has to work on a network you have never seen before, in a room you have never slept in, at the end of a day that has usually already gone badly.

Most monitors are built for the opposite situation. One house, one router, one camera screwed to one wall. Take them somewhere else and the assumptions come apart quietly, and you find out at 9pm on the first night.

A phone-based monitor travels better than a dedicated one for two reasons: nothing extra goes in the bag, and it does not depend on a router you control. What travelling breaks

Range monitors run out of range differently. A DECT or FHSS monitor quotes a range figure measured outdoors with nothing in the way. In a hotel that means concrete floors and lift shafts. In a rented house it means an unfamiliar layout where you have no idea which wall is the problem until you are standing behind it. The number on the box tells you nothing about the building you are actually in.

Wi-Fi cameras expect your Wi-Fi. Many need a setup step performed on a network you control, and plenty of guest networks block devices from seeing each other at all. Why two phones travel well

You are already carrying a phone. If you have a spare, including the old one in the kitchen drawer, you are carrying the whole monitor.

Use an undamaged iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, with a working screen, camera and microphone. Check the device and charger before use. A SIM is unnecessary when the device has working Wi-Fi. Plan a stable mount and accessible power supply, keeping the cable out of the child’s reach.

Pairing is a QR code shown on the baby unit and scanned by the parent unit. There is no account to create on the camera, no router configuration, and nothing to re-provision when the network changes. The networks you will actually meet

Hotel and holiday-rental Wi-Fi

Assume the network is hostile until proven otherwise: captive portals, per-device logins, guest isolation, a 2.4GHz band and a 5GHz band with different names.

The workaround that survives all of that is to stop needing one shared network. Put the baby unit on the room's Wi-Fi and keep the parent unit on cellular. The stream is relayed rather than sent directly between the two devices, so the pair is unaffected by sitting on different networks. It costs a few milliseconds of latency and buys you the ability to be anywhere.

A relative's house

Usually the easiest case. Ask for the Wi-Fi password once, connect the baby unit, and you are done. The phones need nothing else from the network.

At a grandparent's house the problem is rarely networking. Usually the travel cot ends up in a room with one socket, behind a bed. Sort the power and the cable route before you sort anything else.

Nowhere with usable Wi-Fi

Cottages, campsites, a caravan, a ferry cabin. If the baby unit has its own cellular plan it simply uses it. Most spare phones do not, so the alternative is to share a personal hotspot from another phone and connect the baby unit to that.

Test this at home before you rely on it. It works, and it puts both ends of the stream through one mobile connection, which uses noticeably more data than audio alone. Set it up before you leave

Pairing is a one-time action, so do it in your own kitchen where the Wi-Fi works and you have both hands free.

  1. Install the app on both devices and pick the roles.
  2. Scan the QR code. Confirm you get picture and sound.
  3. Turn on the alerts you want, and turn off the ones you do not. Motion detection in an unfamiliar room with curtains that move will wake you for nothing.
  4. Check that notifications arrive with the app closed and the screen locked.
  5. If a second adult is coming, add their device now. Each parent device gets its own alerts.

On arrival, the only new step is joining the baby unit to whatever network exists.

What to pack

  • A long charging cable. Longer than you think. Sockets in hotel rooms are never near the cot, and the cable has to reach without crossing it.
  • A travel adapter if you are going abroad, and a charger that can keep up with a phone streaming video. A slow one will lose ground overnight.
  • Something to hold the phone at an angle. A small gooseneck clamp weighs almost nothing, and a rolled hand towel on top of a wardrobe does the same job.

The camera device must stay plugged in. A phone streaming continuously will flatten itself in a few hours and get warm doing it. The parent unit uses very little power because it is only receiving.

Placement rules do not change when you travel, and the cord rule matters more in an unfamiliar room than at home. Standard safe-sleep guidance is to keep cables at least a metre from the cot and out of reach of a standing toddler. Where this is honestly worse

Mobile data. Video over cellular consumes real data, and it consumes it for hours. On an unlimited domestic plan you will never notice. Roaming abroad, you might. Check the plan before you travel, or keep the parent unit on Wi-Fi and fall back to audio when you do not need the picture.

Weak signal stays weak. No app fixes a rural cottage with one bar. Cellular gives you range that RF cannot touch, and it gives you nothing at all where there is no coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Do both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi? No. The stream is relayed, so the camera can be on hotel Wi-Fi while the parent unit is on cellular, or the two can be on entirely different networks in different places.

Does it work on a plane, or with no signal at all? No. Both ends need an internet connection, either Wi-Fi or cellular. With no connectivity at either end there is nothing to relay.

Is anything recorded while I am away? No. There is no recording, no clip history and nothing stored on a server. Audio and video are encrypted in transit and relayed live to the parent unit.

Can grandparents watch from home while we are out? Yes, if their device is added as a parent unit. Several parent devices can watch the same camera at once, and each one receives its own alerts.
