Using a baby monitor over cellular

Almost every guide to turning old phones into a baby monitor includes the same line: make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. It gets repeated so consistently that people take it for a law of physics.
It is a property of certain apps. The phones impose no such requirement, and the assumption costs you most of what a phone-based monitor is good for.
The short answer
A baby monitor app can work over cellular. The two devices do not need to share a Wi-Fi network, or any network at all. The baby unit needs an internet connection in the nursery, which is normally your home Wi-Fi. The parent unit can sit on mobile data anywhere with signal, so the practical range becomes wherever your carrier reaches.
Where the "same Wi-Fi" rule comes from
Some monitor apps connect the two devices directly to each other. Direct connections are cheap to build and give excellent latency, and they generally only work when both devices sit on the same local network, because anything else means negotiating past two routers and a carrier network that is not expecting the traffic.
Apps built that way have to tell you to stay on one network. The instruction then gets copied into every DIY guide that references them, including guides about apps that work differently.
MonitorUltra relays the stream through a media server (LiveKit) instead. Both devices connect outwards to the relay, which forwards audio and video between them. Nothing is recorded on the way through, and the connection is encrypted in transit. Because both ends dial out, neither one cares what the other is connected to.
What each end actually needs
The baby unit needs power and an internet connection. In a normal setup that is your home Wi-Fi and a socket near the cot, at least a metre away from it. The device has to stay plugged in; streaming video continuously will drain a phone in a few hours. It does not need a SIM card, a phone plan or a working screen.
The parent unit needs Wi-Fi or cellular, and either is fine. It can be on your home Wi-Fi upstairs, on a neighbour's network, or on 4G in a car park. It is only receiving, so it uses very little battery.
There is no pairing step specific to cellular. The QR code scan happens once, on whatever network you are on at the time, and the devices reconnect afterwards regardless of where they are.
Can the baby unit run on cellular too?
Yes, and it is worth understanding the constraints before you rely on it.
The nursery device needs some route to the internet. Usually that is Wi-Fi. In a holiday cottage with no usable broadband, a campervan or a friend's spare room, you can put the baby unit on a phone's personal hotspot or give it its own data SIM. The stream then runs over mobile data at both ends.
Two things to plan for. The hotspot phone becomes a piece of infrastructure and needs to be plugged in as well, because sharing a connection all night flattens a battery about as fast as streaming does. And the data allowance now covers the uplink as well as your viewing, which roughly doubles the bill against the same evening at home.

Data use, honestly
Live video costs meaningfully more data than live audio. That is the whole rule, and the practical advice follows from it.
If you are on an unlimited or generous plan, stream video and stop thinking about it. If you are on a capped plan, or roaming, treat video as something you turn on to check rather than something you leave running for six hours. Audio listening plus cry notifications is the mode that suits a limited allowance, and it is also the mode most parents end up using at home anyway, because you spend the night listening and only occasionally look.
I am not going to quote a megabytes-per-hour figure. Real usage depends on resolution, scene complexity, how much your child moves and what your connection negotiates, and a number precise enough to print would be wrong for most people reading it.
Latency and picture quality
Latency and picture stability depend on both connections, congestion and the devices. Test your actual Wi-Fi and cellular setup; neither network type guarantees a shorter delay.
Over cellular you should expect a slightly longer delay before video appears and more variability in quality as signal changes. For a monitor this matters less than it would for a video call. You are watching a mostly static scene and listening for a sound, and a second of extra delay on either does not change what you do about it.
Push notifications behave the same on both. A cry alert arrives over cellular exactly as it does over Wi-Fi, with the app in the background or closed.
The iOS settings that quietly break it
Four things to check before you rely on a cellular connection, ideally while you are still in the same room as both devices.
- Low Data Mode on the parent unit's cellular connection restricts background activity. If alerts feel late when you are out, check this first.
- Low Power Mode on the baby unit reduces background work and is a bad idea on a device that is supposed to be plugged in permanently. Leave it off.
- Notification permissions for the app on the parent unit. An alert that never gets permission to appear is indistinguishable from a monitor that is not working.
- Focus modes. A sleep-focused Focus schedule will happily silence the one notification you actually want at 2am. Allow the app through explicitly.
Test all four with a real cry, or a convincing impression of one, before the first night you depend on it.
What cellular does not fix
Cellular is not a backup for the nursery end. If your home broadband goes down and the baby unit is on home Wi-Fi, the stream stops, and no amount of signal on the parent unit recovers it. If your home connection is genuinely unreliable, an RF monitor that needs no internet at all is the honest recommendation, and a baby monitor without a Wi-Fi camera goes through those options.
Cellular also does not manufacture coverage. In a basement restaurant with no bars, you have no monitor. This is a smaller problem than the equivalent on a radio monitor, where you lose the signal two rooms away, and it is still a real one.
What it actually changes
Working over mobile data turns the monitor from a device with a range into a device without one.
You can sit in the garden at the far end of a long plot. You can eat dinner at the neighbour's with a babysitter upstairs, and check for yourself instead of texting them. You can leave a sleeping toddler with a grandparent and watch from a restaurant.
