iPhone baby monitor app: setup, costs and limits

An iPhone baby monitor app uses two compatible Apple devices: one stays in the nursery as the camera and microphone, while the other lets a parent watch and listen. Check compatibility before downloading

Open Settings → General → About on each device and check the software version. Both the nursery device and the parent device need iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. Check the App Store listing too, particularly if you are bringing an older device back into use. There is no Android app or web viewer.

Use an undamaged device with a working screen, camera and microphone. Check that it charges normally and can stay on a stable, ventilated surface. A damaged screen or unreliable charging port is a reason to arrange a repair before repurposing the phone. The baby unit can use Wi-Fi without a SIM or mobile plan.

You need a suitable charger, a stable stand and an internet connection that reaches the nursery. Count the cost of those accessories and the subscription when comparing this setup with buying a dedicated monitor. Reusing a phone saves a hardware purchase only if that phone is actually available during monitoring.

Set up the two devices

1. Download MonitorUltra from the App Store on both devices. Review the subscription offer and activate access for a new installation. If you already subscribe, follow the app’s restore or sign-in instructions.
2. Allow the permissions requested for your chosen role. The baby unit needs its camera and microphone; the parent unit needs camera permission to scan the pairing QR code and notification permission for alerts.
3. Choose the baby role on the device that will stay in the nursery. Open its pairing QR code.
4. Choose the parent role on the other device and scan that code. Keep pairing codes private; they are for the people you want to connect.
5. Confirm the connection status and check that the image and sound are arriving. A remembered pairing saves setup later, but check the connection at the start of every session.

What the parent screen shows

Check the connection indicator as well as the picture. A frozen frame can look reassuring even when it has stopped updating. Move something in view during setup, listen from the other room and confirm that the status reacts if you deliberately disconnect a device during a supervised test.

Test alerts and your network before the first night

Keep an adult with the child throughout any test. Start with both devices on your home connection, then take the parent device to the room where you will use it. Check live sound, image updates and any enabled alerts there. Test with the normal lighting and background sounds, since a fan or sound machine can change what the microphone picks up.

Then test the parent phone locked and with the app in the background. Review notification permissions, Focus settings and volume if an alert is missing. Push delivery depends on permissions, the network and iOS; an alert is not guaranteed to arrive. Cry classification can miss a sound or mistake another sound for crying.

If you plan to use cellular on the parent device, switch off its Wi-Fi and repeat the connection check. MonitorUltra relays streams via LiveKit and supports separate networks. Both ends still need working internet, and mobile data charges can apply. Good Wi-Fi can be useful, but the fastest connection depends on conditions at your home.

A connection test is a check of your own setup, not proof of uninterrupted monitoring. If either device loses internet or power, monitoring may stop until the connection recovers. The app attempts to reconnect; verify the live feed after an interruption. Stay close enough to check on your child directly.

Camera placement, power and darkness

Position the device on a secure surface outside the cot, with a view that lets you see the area you need. Keep the device and its charging cable beyond the child’s reach. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says monitors and cords should be at least three feet away. Use at least one metre as a practical minimum and reassess as your child becomes more mobile.

Do not attach a phone or loose cable to the cot. Route the charger so the child cannot pull it down. Use a suitable charger and keep the baby unit powered during monitoring, with ventilation around it. Parent-device battery use varies with video, screen brightness, signal and device condition; check its charge before a long session too.

An iPhone camera needs available light. Software display adjustments do not add an infrared camera to the phone. Test the picture with the room’s actual evening lighting. If you need a clear image in complete darkness, compare that requirement with a dedicated monitor’s documented night-vision capability.

Privacy and the limits of detection

Video and audio are encrypted in transit and relayed through LiveKit. MonitorUltra does not record the streams or provide clip playback. Cry classification runs on the baby unit using Apple’s SoundAnalysis framework; audio is not uploaded for that classification. Account, subscription and connection data are separate from media recordings and are described in the privacy policy.

The app does not monitor breathing or other medical measurements, and it does not replace adult supervision. Motion alerts can react to moving objects in the scene. Treat every alert as a prompt to check, and do not treat the absence of an alert as confirmation that everything is fine.

Subscription, trial and cancellation

New installations require an active subscription to start monitoring, including audio. Some existing installations retain legacy audio access. That is not a free plan available to new users, and reinstalling should not be assumed to preserve it.

Which device can you lock or use for something else?

Keep MonitorUltra open on the baby iPhone while it supplies video. Locking that phone, taking a call or opening another app can interrupt camera capture. The baby unit keeps the screen awake during publishing; lowering screen brightness is different from locking it. Apple's camera interruption documentation explains the background-camera restriction.

The parent device has a different job. MonitorUltra pauses its video subscription when the parent app is no longer active. Reopen the monitoring screen to check the moving picture. Background audio and notifications have their own settings and operating-system limits; test them on the parent device you will actually use. A Lock Screen activity is a status display, not a second live-video screen.

If a call or connection change interrupts a session, check the live image and sound again after returning to the app. Do not assume that a remembered pairing or an old frame proves that monitoring has resumed. The interactive checklist keeps these checks together for each session.
