Baby monitor app subscriptions: costs and cancellation

MonitorUltra requires a subscription for new installations, including audio monitoring. It does not offer a lifetime purchase or an ongoing free audio plan for new users. Some existing installations retain legacy audio access. If you are looking specifically for a baby monitor without a subscription, check that requirement before choosing the app.

I build MonitorUltra, and an earlier version of this guide described the old audio access as available to everyone. That information is out of date. This guide explains current access, introductory offers and cancellation, then gives you a checklist for comparing the cost of any monitor.

Download, trial and subscription are different

Downloading an app does not necessarily grant monitoring access. For a new MonitorUltra installation, an active subscription is required to start a session. Video, audio, cry detection, motion alerts, sounds and family sharing are part of the subscription experience.

An introductory trial is available only if the selected App Store product has an applicable offer and your account is eligible. The app checks that eligibility. Read the duration, renewal price and billing date on the purchase screen; do not assume that a trial described elsewhere applies to your account or every plan.

Some installations that used the app before this change retain legacy audio access. This is an existing-installation entitlement, not a plan a new user can select. Do not assume that deleting and reinstalling the app preserves it. Contact support before changing an installation if you are unsure about its access.

What the website subscription costs

The web plans are $7.99/month or $49.99/year, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can cancel renewal at any time. App Store prices and offers may differ from the website; check the terms where you buy.

One subscription can be shared through the app’s family-sharing flow. Configure that access on the devices involved rather than purchasing separately by default. You still need two compatible devices running iOS or iPadOS 17 or later and internet on both. Include accessories and mobile data in your budget if you need them.

A monthly plan may fit a shorter period of use. An annual plan costs less than twelve monthly web payments, but requires the annual payment up front. Choose based on the period you expect to use it, and compare the total with a monitor you would buy outright. There is no need to assume the app is always the cheaper choice.

What happens when you cancel

Cancelling renewal normally leaves access active until the end of the paid period. Once that access expires, a new installation needs an active subscription to resume monitoring. It does not automatically turn into an unlimited audio monitor. Existing legacy access is a separate case.

Manage the subscription through the channel where you purchased it. Follow Apple’s subscription controls for an App Store purchase, or the web subscription management instructions for a website purchase. Removing the app is not the same as cancelling renewal. Check the cancellation confirmation and the access end date.

The web money-back guarantee is distinct from an App Store introductory offer. Read the applicable purchase terms and contact support if you need help identifying the purchase channel. Do not rely on a general article to determine a specific renewal date.

Comparing a monitor without recurring fees

If avoiding recurring payments is essential, compare products that explicitly offer a one-time purchase. For each candidate, check which functions continue without payment and whether the quoted price includes the equipment you need. Live view, alert types, remote access and recorded clips may have different terms.

Also check whether the monitor requires internet. MonitorUltra streams over Wi-Fi or cellular through a relay service; it needs working internet at both ends. Check the setup before a long session

Prepare two undamaged, compatible devices, suitable power and a stable stand. Check the nursery connection and test live audio, video and enabled alerts from the room where you will use the parent unit. Keep an adult with the child during tests. Notifications and connections can fail, so monitoring never replaces adult supervision.
